Maps produced in 1597,1779 and 1787 show a church and village at what is now Hordle Cliff
In the 1820s (probably during the great storm of 1824) both church and the village were destroyed.
Later a new village, called Hordle was established two miles inland .
 Thanks to Ian and Tony West for this interesting snippet of information
